10 Fast, Easy And Affordable Spring Decorating Tips

Now that it’s May and the threat of cold weather (and snow!) has finally passed, it’s the ideal time for a quickie spring makeover for your home. Here are a few easy decorating tips to make your rooms feel and look cooler, quickly, without spending a lot of money:

Light colored slipcovers and a sisal rug can make a room look and feel cool

1. Roll up heavy wool rugs and leave the floor bare or lay down a sisal or sea grass rug for a lighter look and feel.

2. Put away woolen or chenille throws.

3. Transform velvet, wool and chenille sofa pillows with cotton or linen slipcovers.

4. Store heavy oil paintings and dark colored artwork. Bring out light pastels and watercolors.

5. Take down, clean and store heavy curtains. Have your windows washed and hang sheers or linen panels to allow more natural light into your rooms.

Remove dark curtains and artwork and switch to light colored accessories

6. Switch your tabletop accessories. Put away dark candles and heavy pieces and, instead, display a bowl of lemons or Granny Smith apples, white porcelain pieces, white candles, and a potted flowering plant.

Every room can benefit from lighter-colored accents

7. Slipcover living room and dining room upholstered seating pieces in solid light-colored cotton duck or linen.

8. Repaint all of your windowsills to give your home a fresh, clean look. And keep those windowsills knick-knack free to avoid a cluttered look.

9. Save money by replacing your halogen bulbs with LED bulbs that are cooler and much more energy efficient. You can retrofit your existing fixtures.

10. If you live in a place that gets cold in the winter, use your overhead junction box solely for lighting fixtures instead of installing a permanent overhead ceiling fan. Instead, get a retro-looking metal table fan or floor fan now that can be stored away in the fall.
