I love bedside tables with lots of closed storage because no matter how big a master bedroom may be, there never seems to be enough space for clothing and bits and pieces.
A pair of nightstands with storage looks balanced and is practical.

Bedrooms that have only a smallish nightstand on one side of the bed and a big, much higher bureau on the other, look sort of like the Titanic going down – off-balanced.
One bedside table is not enough
Instead, a matching pair of nightstands with drawers for storing underwear, socks and books can make any bedroom look more balanced and feel more tranquil. Plus, it’s more equitable for couples to each have their own chest.
Crate and Barrel Varick nightstand
For some reason, furniture manufacturers who sell bedroom sets seem to provide only one night stand, hence the discrepancy. Why just one? (These must be the same culprits that sell sofas with matching love seats, even though the resulting L shaped configuration is uncomfortable for conversation and difficult to configure in many homes.)
So, I say, let’s start protesting and demand that two nightstands come with every bedroom set. As my favorite civil dissident, Henry David Thoreau, said, “It takes two…”

This post made me chuckle this morning. My parents always had one night stand, as that is what came with their set in the late 1940′s. When they upgraded in 1985, they only bought one night stand. My mother fussed about never having a night stand for almost 40 years, and then didn’t buy two when opportunity knocked. We inherited their bedroom furniture several years ago, and have added a second nightstand.
Hi Peggy,
How interesting that, after all those years, your mother didn’t treat herself to a bedside table. ‘Glad to hear you have one, though!

May I simply just say what a comfort to find someone who truly knows what they’re talking about over the internet. You actually realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. A lot more people really need to look at this. You certainly possess the gift.
