Bathroom Safety
The bathroom can be a dangerous place for children. Try these tips:
- Place non-skid strips in the tub and shower.
- Use bathmats with rubberized backing.
- Install counter tops with rounded, not squared, corners.
No More Wide Open Spaces
The upstairs entrance areas of many split-level homes have an open railing that can be dangerous for babies and young children.
You can protect your little ones by placing a closed credenza or commode in front of the open slats. One caveat: be sure the back of the piece is finished with wood or a wood veneer that will look attractive when viewed from below.
Slip-Free, Carefree Flooring
Children need flooring that is safe, and mothers need flooring that is easy to care for. Wood floors that are waxed can also be slippery; try two or three coats of satin polyurethane instead. It’s less slippery than wax and will also preserve your floor. Engineered wood floor laminates are a wonderful alternative because they look just like wood and can be easily wiped or mopped when necessary but do not require regular sanding or resealing.
Commercial, flat-weave carpeting tiles are another good choice for bedrooms, family rooms, and hallways where acoustics are an issue. And if a tile becomes soiled, it can be washed down or replaced with another clean tile in minutes.
