Be The Change
Jul 9th, 2008 by Lauri
Last night, my husband and I watched in horror as Dan Harris, on ABC’s Nightline, reported how he could buy a young Haitian child as a slave, in only 10 hours.
He showed a slight, wide-eyed 11 year old girl who had been given up by her mother to a family who promised to feed her and see that she received an education. The only thing she received was constant beatings because she did not please the family with her housework. The scars on her arms proved it. Although I traveled to Africa many years ago (and things have certainly deteriorated since then) I have never seen poverty as I did when I visited Port-au-Prince.
There are also countless children in Iraq who are in desperate need so today I signed the International Rescue Committee’s Iraq Humanitarian Pledge at
http://ga3.org/irc/helpiraqirefugees
They need food, medicine, education and a safe place to live and the IRC is on the ground providing lifesaving relief. You can help, too
For each person who signs the IRC Iraq Humanitarian Pledge, one of their supporters will donate $1 to provide additional lifesaving services to vulnerable Iraqi families caught in the crossfire of violence. That means additional food, mattresses, clothing, and medical and housing assistance.
Will you join with me and sign your name? It might be simple. But together, we can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.
Thank you.
Hi Lauri,
I’m going through your whole list tonight, and had to stop here to put in a comment.
This is absolutely outrageous! What happened to the child that Dan “bought”?
There is another excellent organization helping children called Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, (CFCA). Web site: http://www.cfcausa.org
They don’t advertise on TV etc, and so are able to provide more support in nutrition, education, health care, family development, clothing, and encouragement to the children and elderly persons they help in 25 countries, including Haiti.
Organizations such as Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy have rated the CFCA with highest ratings for charity efficiency and accountability.
For $30.00 a month the life of a child can be drastically changed.
Imagine!
Thanks for sharing your caring Lauri. You have a loving heart!
Hello Portia,
The child that Dan negotiated to buy, but of course didn’t, was moved to an orphanage after her mother said she could still not keep her. It was heart-breaking to see the little girl crying after she was separated from her family once again but, apparently, she is doing better now.
Thanks for the information about CFCA.
