One of the good things that seems to be a result of the challenging economic times we are going through may be that we are turning back to simpler pursuits: Spending more time with family; pinpointing enjoyable home-based hobbies; regularly repairing things rather than shopping and replacing them; gardening and improving what we already have and enjoying the refinements.
For lots of us, the last point includes getting our places in order. Do you agree and feel that it’s more relaxing to live in a tidy space than one that suffers from visual chaos? Don’t you seem to feel better when your place is neat and you have the self-discipline to keep it that way? It certainly feels like a good thing, doesn’t it?
It is also good Feng Shui. As the brilliant architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, once said, “God is in the details.”
Here is a simple tip that can help make your home look better quickly, assuming you have indoor plants: First, group them all together in one spot. Then, check to see that every one is potted in the same material: all clay, all brass, all black.
Finally, whether you have a grouping or just one tree, be sure that the soil and roots are covered with Spanish or green moss (available at florists and home improvement stores). This “detail” will give the plants – and your space – a more finished, elegant look, instantly, so that you can enjoy your greenery more.
Do you have plants or a tree in your home? Do they give you pleasure?

I absolutely agree that it’s easier to relax in a neat space. I do have one exception: Saturday mornings. That’s the moment when little messes equal freedom.
And thanks for the tip on indoor plants. Those little consistencies make such a difference!
Hmm, very cognitive post.
Is this theme good enough for the Digg?
Karcheg,
Thanks! Gee, I have no idea. Perhaps I’ll check…
Hi Lauri! I’ve been a devoted fan for several years. Your first book (UWYH) I have read and re-read; had to buy THREE because when I loan it out, it doesn’t come back! How cool is that?
When I read your first book it was in desperation. I knew my family room and other spaces were not functioning well and what I learned drastically improved the spaces. My then husband was dismayed when I started moving stuff around (and had to have the cable guy come and redrill so I could move the armoire/tv), but when I was done he told everyone about what I had done. A judge’s wife called me and asked for the name of your book because of what he’d said.
Found your blog again and am so glad. It is lovely as you take the principles and apply them to other issues. Thanks!
Hello MK,
Welcome!
I’m so glad Use What You Have Decorating has helped you and that both you and your husband are happier with your home.
Many thanks for your sweet comments.
