It seems that every day more and more people are becoming eco-conscious. Even my husband, who years ago teased me unmercifully about being a fanatic recycler and light-turner-outer, has gotten with the program and has joined the green team. If it’s paper, glass or metal, these days, he is conscientious about placing it in our yellow and blue bins, and he even remembers to shut the lights out whenever he leaves a room. What a guy.
Speaking of switching off lights, have you heard about Earth Hour?
This coming Saturday, March 28th, between 8:30 and 9:30 PM in your time zone, 2140 cities in 82 countries individuals, companies and governments will be turning out their lights for one hour to show their support for saving the Earth from global warming. The goal is to have 1 billion people around the planet vote for the Earth by shutting off their lights. Those who leave their lights on will be thought of as voting for global warming.
The United Nations and other international groups are supporting this global initiative and many well-known landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, hotels in Las Vegas, Hong Kong’s Symphony of Lights and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro are participating.
So, please join in and cast your vote for our planet this weekend.
A Saturday night date by candlelight? Sounds like a plan.

We had a great Earth Hour. Loved it so much we extended it longer. We didn’t want to power up afterwards.
My daughter read aloud and my boyfriend strummed on his guitar and I sat and smiled and enjoyed some quality time with my loved ones.
Anne,
It sounds as though Earth Hour 2009 will always be a sweet memory for you.
Oddly, Earth Hour was not publicized here in the Midwest. I’m sorry to say we did not observe it—my husband had just come home from business travel, and we needed light to get started on the kitchen renovation: tiling the floor.
