Walking The Line – Straight Traffic Patterns

Have you noticed how in some homes the furniture is arranged so that the traffic pattern is around the seating area in the living room, family room, bedroom or even dining room?Detour sign

One easy way to avoid creating an obstacle path or detour is to check where the doorway or entrance to the room is located and then, if possible, arrange the furniture so that it is out of the way. You may especially want to keep it clear if you have one doorway, or a window, directly across the room from another.

Keep in mind that allowing the chi (energy flow) to move through the space without obstruction is one of the main premises of ensuring that there is good Feng Shui in your home, too.

Not long ago I was at a client’s house whose living room conversation area was situated smack dab in the middle of her traffic pattern. After I pointed it out, we shifted her seating so that it simply moved 8′ to the left, opening up the path and allowing everyone to walk directly from one end of the room to the other. In this case, the path then went in a straight line towards her guest bathroom and master bedroom suite, without forcing anyone to circumvent her chairs and sofa.

Here’s how another client and I opened up the traffic pattern in her apartment in less than an hour.Before_traffic

After_trafficYou can save steps and energy by checking that the traffic patterns throughout your home allow you and your guests to walk from room to room in straight lines.
