Change the feel of your room with drapery panels

It’s amazing what 2 drapery panels flanking a window can do to the look of your room. Did you know that you can create the illusion of a taller ceiling or a larger window just by where you install your drapery panel hardware? If you’d like to create the illusion of a taller ceiling and add some drama to your room hang your drapery panel hardware right underneath the crown molding or if you don’t have crown, right at the ceiling (allowing for clearance of fabric or curtain clip rings). If this adds too much height for you, hang the hardware half-way between the top of the window molding and the ceiling for a less heightened, but still dramatic look.

If you’d like to make your window appear wider, purchase an oversized curtain rod and hang the panels so that they start covering at the inside edge of the window frame and continue outside covering part of your wall.

If you’d like to make your window appear smaller, purchase a rod that is even with the width of the outside of the window molding. Hang your panels so that they start covering at the outside edge of the window frame and continue inside covering part of your window.

As far as the drapery panel length, in general panels should just touch the floor. Puddles (where the curtain falls 1/2-2″ on the floor) are popular now too but you have to like the look. For a typical 8′ ceiling if you’re going with standard length panels- (typically 84″ and 96″ in length), purchase the longer ones and hem the bottoms to hit the floor where you want them to. If you’re not a sewer try the no-sew fabric tape that you just fold and iron instead of having to stitch.

Now enjoy the new feel of your room!
