Designs That Take The Cake

June 7, 2010

As a first-time Mother-of-the-Bride I’ve been somewhat surprised by the number of design elements that are involved in planning a wedding: invitations, dresses, tabletops, lighting, flowers, of course, the actual event space and much more. The style selections seem to go on and on, as anyone who has been through the experience knows.

One of my favorite parts of the undertaking, so far, was accompanying Tracy and Matthew to meet the brilliant cake designer, Ron Ben-Israel. Yay for cake design! Every one of the beauties lining the shelves of his Tribeca headquarters was unique and elegant. Oprah had one of his confections on the cover of her 10th Anniversary Issue.

I was really glad that Tracy and Matt had to make the final choice because I kept thinking, “I love that one… no, that one… no, that one!” I won’t even go into the tasting session. (It reminded me of how overwhelmed my clients say they were, when making decorating decisions, before meeting with me.)

After a while Ron drew a detailed sketch of their dream cake, noting their favorite flavors and fillings (there will be more than one). It’s hard to say whether his creation will look or taste better but one thing is certain: we cannot wait for the cake cutting!
