Much Smaller Than A Breadbox

March 4, 2010

Whenever I walk into a client’s home and see one of those large floral boxes of tissues in the living room, I ask, “Do you really need to have those out on the coffee table/end table/media cabinet?”1tissue_box

I realize that I sound like a la-di-da decorator but why oh why does anyone require a big unattractive rectangular dispenser? Even when one has a cold or allergies, aren’t the small square boutique size boxes sufficient?  Does it make sense to keep a giant size box (which requires more paper production and takes up twice the space of the smaller ones) in the bathroom, the smallest room in the house? I don’t think so. While I’m at it, why don’t tissues come in plain white boxes? In 2010, paper boxes manufactured with colored dyes and printing and faux designs are so unnecessary and un-eco-conscious. And, hasn’t Kimberly Clark heard that everyone is trying to go green, downsize and declutter?tissue box

Therefore, may I propose that we all save trees and resources by using only small sized boxes and that we put good-looking covers over each one – perhaps made of metal or wood – so that they coordinate with our rooms’ decor?tissueBox2 If we do, the boxes and our homes will look more elegant and cohesive. Sigh… just thinking about it brings tears of joy to my eyes. Would you mind passing the you-know-whats?

Lauri,

I agree that the boxes are unattractive, but convenience trumps design in my house. The large boxes are more economical, and my favorite tissues don’t come in the small boxes. We all have allergies and we go through a lot of tissues. We have boxes in every room including the bathrooms, plus both vehicles. Someday maybe I’ll figure out an attractive cover that doesn’t look like my grandma crocheted it!

Hi Marta,

It sounds as though functionality rules in your case, no matter the size of your home. Please let me know when you find a good-looking cover for those big boxes!

I couldn’t help but respond to this, especially as I’m busy blowing my nose due to some late winter hay fever…I would love to be able keep the boutique boxes of kleenex in my house, but it just isn’t practical! Talk about staying green, we would waste so much cardboard, not to mention the production cost of all those small boxes, if my family used the boutique boxes. We also have boxes in every bathroom, the kids’ rooms, the office, the vehicle, and at my bedside. With the exception of the small box in the cute wicker basket by my bed, these are all the larger boxes. I wish I could cover them with something cute, but no one seems to make anything. A girl can dream of cute little boxes of kleenex, anyway. Thanks for the fun thoughts today!

Hi Tami,

I’m with you – it’s time for the bathroom accessory companies to manufacture a few stylish tissue box covers in assorted metals and wood finishes.
Hope your allergies subside quickly!
