October, 2003 Contest: Is your home light or dark and how has this affected your decorating?

Congratulations to our contest winner!
Jessica Combs of North Bend, VA

Our home is a standard split-level built in 1980. From the open entry to the open living space, light is everywhere in the house. When we purchased this home I found the bright light from the sun very happy but everything was white and stark. I enjoy coming home in the evening to something warm and cozy, such as my favorite slippers and a hot cup of tea. I wanted my home to have those characteristics. I also wanted to keep the light and airy feel of the home. To master these tasks, I chose a french vanilla color for my walls. My accent wall has become chocalate ice cream as well as the entry way. This has made the entry smaller and cozier and the fireplace on the accent wall pop out of the wall at you. I have hung light and airy window treatments on the windows and sliding door. I chose furniture that was army and olive colored with cream and burgandy accents. I found two antique lamps and a couple of great 1940’s cream shades for them. I have accented with darker wood tones and candles. The home is now a warm and cozy place to come home to in the evening; it has a airy and bright appeal during the day. The use of sheer draperies keeps it that way.
