June_July, 2004 Contest: What does the outside of your home look like?
Congratulations to our contest winner!

Stately, elegant and “buttoned up” are some of the terms used by passersby to describe our home. We hear these descriptions repeatedly, several times a day, since our home is on a street with a lot of foot traffic. Whether we’re tending to the garden, making general repairs or just enjoying our yard, nearly everyone passing our home throws compliments or words of encouragement our way.
I never really thought of our home as elegant or stately; however, the improvements we’ve made have generated quite a bit of attention in our city–particularly since the house sat uninhabited for over 20 years. We tried to make sure that any improvements we made were sensitive to the 1920s architecture. We’ve kept upgrades fairly simple and tried to fix, rather than replace, what was already there. We’ve also put a lot of effort into “framing” our relatively modest home with a combination of gardens, shrubs and stones.
I don’t know if our home is truly elegant, stately or “buttoned up,” but the overall effect created by the warm hue on the clapboards, the crisp white trim and the naturally casual flow of the landscaping certainly make me feel good when I pull into the driveway after a long day at work.
